Partnerships

Creating bonds among various sectors of the society and developing their cooperation is a trend all the more recognized as an efficient means for solving a range of social problems and affirming a sustainable socio-economic development. None of the sectors has answers to all the questions, controversies and perplexities of the contemporary society. Neither do they have enough power, possibilities, funds, resources, jurisdiction, knowledge or skills to take the responsibility for developing the community on their own. Thus, creating partnerships between the private and non-governmental sectors, once strongly opposed sides, with the aim of solving a wide array of social and ecological issues, has become quite a common practice in the world in the last decades.

In the past, three sectors of the society (public, private and civil) traditionally served separate and complementary social roles. Still, in the last few decades in most developed, as well as many developing countries, clear-cut borders between the responsibilities of each sector have become ever more ambiguous and the public pressure for change and need for more intensive cooperation with other sectors ever stronger.

Not so long ago, the cooperation between, for example, an ecological organization and a multinational enterprise was unthinkable, and they were labeled as irreconcilable enemies. Today, however, there are many well-known examples of partnerships between non-profit and profit sectors, which are highlighted at conferences and analyzed in detail in professional publications and at business schools. Nevertheless, the idea of partnerships is still in the early phase of development and there are still many issues and questions to be solved: How to develop a true partner relationship between an NGO and a business, which would exceed pure philanthropy? What are the possible forms of cooperation? Which factors might discourage and undermine cooperation? In what ways can partnerships contribute to the sustainable development of the society?
